Why the Air Fryer Works So Well for Burgers
The air fryer cooks burgers evenly by circulating hot air all the way around the patty, so both sides cook at the same time without needing constant flipping. This not only speeds things up if you but also helps create a lightly browned exterior while keeping the inside of the burger nice and juicy.
As the burger cooks the excess fat melts away giving you a great flavor and texture without the mess of cooking it in a skillet.

Air Fryer Burger FAQ’s
How do I cook frozen burgers in the air fryer?
You can cook frozen burger patties directly in the air fryer without thawing first. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F, then cook the burgers for 10–14 minutes, flipping them halfway through so they cook evenly. Always make sure the internal temperature reaches 160°F before serving.
How long do burgers take in the air fryer?
Most burgers take about 8–12 minutes at 375°F but it really depends on thickness.
How do I cook Air Fryer Turkey Burgers?
They cook in the same way as hamburgers. The cook time is typically the same but may vary depending on the size of the burger. You must make sure they are fully cooked all the way through to a minimum temperature of 165F°
Why are my air fryer burgers dry?
it sounds like they may be overcooked or that you used meat that is too lean. We prefer 80/20 ground beef for the best results and have found that most of the fat renders out as the burger cooks.
Can I cook hamburgers in the air fryer without oil?
Yes, the fat in the beef will prevent them from sticking.
What’s the best Air Fryer to get?
Our current Air Fryer is a Ninja 4 QT size which will fit two large burgers at a time in the basket. I think this size works well for two people. If you are cooking for a larger family you might want to consider the largest size which is the Ninja 6.5 QT Air Fryer, it has a basket that can hold up to 5 lbs. of fries or 9 lbs. of chicken wings.
Burger Variations and Substitutions
- Classic Cheeseburger – toast your burger bun first for best results! Then add your toppings of choice which for this version include sliced cheese, hamburger pickles, sliced tomato, a few slices of onion, lettuce, and ketchup or mayonnaise.
- Bacon Double Cheeseburger – This is an indulgent burger sandwich! Stack two cooked burger patties, each topped with melted cheese. Add crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and your favorite sauce such as ketchup or BBQ sauce, then repeat the layers for a hearty double burger.
- Turkey Burger – a lower calorie and lower fat alternative to hamburger but still very tasty. Serve with a slice of provolone cheese, lettuce, red onion, and sauteed mushrooms or avocado for maximum flavor.
- BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger – For a smoky twist, swap the ketchup for BBQ sauce and add crispy bacon. Top the burger with cheddar cheese, lettuce, red onion, and pickles for a rich, flavorful burger.
- Mushroom Swiss Burger – Top your burger with a slice of Swiss cheese and sautéed mushrooms for a savory, restaurant-style option. Add a little mayo or garlic aioli for that extra flavor boost.

Tips for Making the Juiciest Air Fryer Burgers
- I use 80/20 beef for the best flavor and it’s much less prone to drying out as it cooks than lean ground beef.
- If you are making thicker larger burgers then you should add a small indentation in the center of each to help prevent it bulging up in the middle as it cooks.
- Don’t overwork the beef as you form the patties. If you over mix the meat you’ll activate a muscle protein called myosin which will make for a very tough burger by the time it is cooked, so be gentle!
- Cook the burgers in a single layer in the basket with no overlap to ensure that they cook evenly.
Storage and Reheating
Fridge – you can store cooked burgers for up to 3 days.
Freezer – cooked burger patties will keep well in an airtight container for up to up to 4 months. For the best taste and to avoid freezer burn consume them within 3 months.
Reheating – use your Air Fryer at 350F° for about 3-4 minutes or until they are warmed all the way through. You can also microwave the patties to reheat them.
