My two boys and their dad love to fish but they’ve never had the opportunity to fly fish until recently. We’ve fished in lakes and ponds in Mississippi, inside the barrier reef in Belize, and off the Gulf State Park Pier whenever we’ve visited the Orange Beach area in Alabama. We would all readily admit that we’re complete novices at every kind of fishing, so I was keen to find an attentive fishing guide that would be patient with my them (they are ten and thirteen) and hopefully help them to catch some trout at the same time!
I always do my research before we travel or book a trip and Tripadvisor is usually the first place I look for reviews of pretty much everything from hotels to things to do. It was obvious right away that Kirk’s Flyshop was the most popular choice to find an Estes Park fly fishing guide, all the reviews were great and they guarantee that you’ll catch fish.
We booked a four hour guided fly fishing trip for the all three guys and were fortunate to have Chris as our guide. We all met early in the morning at the flyshop in downtown Estes Park where the guys were fully kitted out with waders and boots, then we made our way to the Big Thompson river where they spent the morning fishing for trout. I sat in the shade on a rock, read my book and took photos from the riverbank. I was worried that the boys might be a little bored as it’s basically four hours of standing around in the water waiting for a fish to bite, but they absolutely loved it. The boys and dad caught several fish each including Rainbow trout, Brown trout and Cutbow trout. All of the fishing in the area we were in was catch and release so we clicked a quick photo of the catch and then let the fish go. Our guide, Chris, was very patient with everyone and did a lot of running around between all three, untangling lines and helping them to unhook the fish that they caught. It was such a great morning and the boys have been talking about it ever since!
If you are planning a vacation to Estes Park or Rocky Mountain National Park and want to try your hand at fly fishing you can easily book your trip online at Kirk’s Fly Shop, they have all sorts of fun trips including guided fishing, hiking and fishing in the National Park, horseback and fishing, overnight camping and many other options if you’re a little more adventurous than we are.
